Camfil Sustainability Report 2023: Advocating for clean air towards a sustainable future
Riverdale, New Jersey, April 23, 2024 – Celebrating 60 years in the air filtration industry, Camfil remains committed to delivering clean air that protects people, processes, and the planet. With the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighting that 99% of the global population breathes unhealthy air, the urgency for clean indoor air has never been clearer. Camfil strongly supports this scientific evidence which is illustrated throughout the 2023 Camfil Sustainability Report.
Mark Simmons, President and CEO of Camfil, states: “For six decades, we’ve championed clean air technology. Now, we’re shifting towards a greener future by further addressing the environmental impact of our products. Our Life Cycle Assessment methods and sustainability frameworks ensure that every breath of fresh air we provide is sustainable.”
As a major stepping stone in 2023, a new sustainability framework was implemented within the operational processes, emphasizing the journey towards achieving net-zero emissions. This framework is built on four pillars:
- Clean Air Everywhere
- Caring for People
- Clean Operations
- Preserving Resources
The strategic framework will act as a beacon to align with current and future initiatives. Having pledged to the UN Global Compact fifteen years ago, Camfil reaffirmed its commitment by joining the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2023. This aligns with the Paris Agreement and involves establishing greenhouse gas reduction targets based on climate science.
To further prepare for coming legislation, Camfil conducted a thorough inventory of its factories and operations to assess the environmental footprint and readiness for compliance with EU legislation, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
In addition, Camfil AB joined the EcoVadis sustainability rating platform. Anne-Marie von Salis, Vice President of Sustainability at Camfil, remarked, “Joining the EcoVadis program reflects our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in our sustainability practices. Through EcoVadis, we're able to benchmark our performance, identify areas for improvement, and showcase our progress to stakeholders.”
Environmental impact achieved during 2023 includes:
- 26% increase in sales of filters with Eurovent energy classification A or A+
- 110-ton CO2 saving by shifting transport from road to intermodal in the U.S.
- LED lighting adoption in three production facilities, saving 540 MWh annually
- Geo-exchange cooling system adoption in Malaysia facility, saving 840 MWh annually
- 13% CO2 reduction per box by switching to environmentally friendly transport boxes
Camfil’s commitment to sustainability is also demonstrated through the following product innovations:
- TurboPulse: Innovative pulse filter technology with 20% lower initial pressure drop
- CamCarb XG: Molecular filtration targeting gas-phase contaminants, reducing energy consumption by up to 35%
- AirImage-COR: Online corrosion monitoring solution aiding customers in reducing their environmental footprint
Camfil’s sustainability journey towards improving Indoor Air Quality aligns with its vision, Clean Air – A Human Right, driving Camfil to continuously pursue sustainable solutions that not only protect our planet but also safeguard the fundamental right to clean air for all.
